How to become . . . A Careers Adviser

You must have a degree or HE qualification. This will enable you to progress onto the Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance. It helped me to get into this type of work by having additional qualifications in Counselling and Mentoring. Additionally it is essential to keep upto date with your professional training. I am currently doing an Advanced Certificate in Careers
Education Guidance and will start the Masters in Careers Education in September.

Every Child Matters

Every Child Matters (ECM) is a new approach to the well-being of children and young people from birth to the age of 19. The Government’s aim is for every child to have the support they need to Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution and Achieve Economic Well-Being.

Since September there have been numerous events organised across College which many of you have attended, including the Substance Misuse Awareness Fayre, Children In Need, Sexual
Health Talks and HMP Wellingborough Presentations.

ECM inputs are organised throughout the year and here are some that are coming up:
STI Talk and Chlamydia Screening – 12 March This will be taking place at Kingsland Campus
Mental Health Week 7 – 11 April 2008.
A week of events to address some of the issues linked with Mental Health.

Exciting news for Kingsland and Learning Warehouse Students! There are new books available at Kingsland, but unfortunately only whilst Malcolm is on site (Tuesday & Thursday 1200 noon-4.00pm). There is now a small library at Leighton Buzzard which is being managed by Chris Willis (your administrator). Please see her for times etc.

No Smoking Day– 12th March

The NHS Smoking Cessation Service will have a ‘stand’ at Main Site in college on the 27th February 2008. There will be information, freebies and advice given by Clive Doutrey. This will be followed up by a session on 5th March, ‘Commit to Quit’, for anyone interested in giving up smoking on ‘No Smoking Day’. Clive will be able to discuss the help and support available to you.

Use our ready reckoner to find out how much cash you’ve puffed away … Stopping smoking now could be like giving yourself a hefty pay rise – and it’s one benefit you’ll feel straight away. The actual cost for a basic rate taxpayer of smoking 20 a day for a year is £2,429!

Employers like Key Skills because they are needed in the workplace.
If you want to go to University Key Skills can get you UCAS points.
You can do Key Skills with any qualification.
There is a Key Skills level to suit you.
Improve your Maths, English and ICT skills.

The next round of key skills exams will be from 3rd March to 20th March 08.

Library and IT Workshop Opening Times

There seem to be a fair number of Students that are unaware that during half terms the Library and IT Workshops are open. The timing of these facilities is limited so can you please check the notices and ask the staff related. This is fantastic opportunity to catch up with your work and to do
extra research to boost your assignment grade. Alternatively why not use the opportunity to do
revision!

On my first day as a physio for Harpenden Town I was called onto the pitch to treat an injured player, so I got up and ran onto the pitch. The ground was muddy and as I was running my trainer got stuck in the mud, I lost my balance and I fell onto the pitch. The bucket and sponge I was carrying fell down, I was covered in mud and the player I was meant to treat got up and laughed.

Welcome to the first edition of the Dunstable College Student Newsletter.

The idea around this is to deliver useful, fun and interesting information about the college to the students by the students.

I am currently seeking to build a team of students that can run and deliver a Newsletter once a month. I am willing to work as flexibly as possible as I do understand that you have your course commitments to fulfil. Therefore, I would be delighted to meet any students who would like to make a contribution towards the Student Newsletter.

There are a number of important roles available such as:
Editing on the Apple Mac,
Interviewing Staff,
Writing an article on a trip that you have attended, a Charity event at the college, plus other college related issues that may be brought forward,
plus other roles available.
